What is Transitional Kindergarten?  

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year program that provides a structured learning environment in which young students engage in developmentally appropriate activities and hands-on learning, preparing them for the academic and social expectations of Kindergarten. Children who complete TK move on to Kindergarten the following year.

 

Important TK Enrollment Age Eligibility: 

  • TK is available to all children who turn 4 years old by September 1 of the school year.  
  • ABCUSD provides TK classrooms in all our elementary schools.
  • All TK students must register at their home school (based on home address).
  • TK Class Maximum is 24 students with an adult ratio of 10:1.
  • If your school TK program reaches capacity, the student is assigned to a different school for the year or until space opens at their home school.
  • TK is another option for parents under the California Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) initiative that became law in 2021.
