It’s Back to School Night for many schools this month! I’ve had the pleasure of visiting a number of Back to School Nights including: Gonsalves ES (August 29), Leal ES (Sept. 4), Aloha ES (Sept. 5), and Wittmann ES (Sept. 6). This week, I look forward to visiting the Back to School Nights at Fedde MS (Sept. 10), Furgeson ES (Sept. 11), and Whitney HS (Sept. 12).

It was wonderful to speak with many staff members as well as families who participated in learning about this new school year. Thank you to all the staff members for providing important information as we begin the 2019-20 school year!

On Sept. 5th, I met with Ivy D. Daulo, Partnership Specialist of the Los Angeles Regional Census Center, to discuss how we can partner together on how to provide information to our families for the 2020 Census. It was a very informative meeting with many ideas before April 1, 2020. We will be disseminating information throughout the District on how we can encourage our families to participate in the 2020 Census.

Saturday, Sept. 7th, we held a Board Special Study Session in the District Office. The first part of the day focused on providing an Equity Session with Dr. Daniel Moirao of Generation Ready. The Board Members and Cabinet Members participated in interactive activities similar to what has been provided to school teams on building cultural proficient schools.

In the afternoon, we discussed the next steps in the implementation of Measure BB. Ryan Carter, Bond Program Manager, discussed the implementation of the “Quick Start” projects at all 19 elementary schools. This includes installing security cameras, water bottle filler stations, shade shelters, and playground projects. New playground equipment and rubberized play surfaces will be installed at all 19 elementary schools.

The Board later gave staff direction to focus on completing projects at all high schools in the District next. Two scenarios were provided for the Board to consider and it was unanimous that going with completing projects at one grade span was cost effective and efficient. The Board Special Study Session on Saturday was videotaped and is available on our District’s Website at: Board > ABC Board Meeting Channel > Board Meeting Video Archive.

News About Our Schools and/or District

ABC Visitor Management System - A Visitor Management System has been rolled out to 19 schools, with full implementation expected by the end of the year. Every ABCUSD school website has the ABC Visitor Management information under the “Latest News” section. The video explaining the program is also available, with closed captioning, on the District’s YouTube channel. Please find a YouTube link below to introduce / overview the ABC Visitor Management System for the public. This video link can be used in presentations, social media, email, and any way that may serve your communication needs regarding this new program at all ABC schools. https://youtu.be/_cwq4WZ6y2c

Career Technical Education (CTE) - On Wednesday, September 4, 2019, Sergio Garcia (Principal, Artesia HS), Rosi Gomez (Dean, Artesia HS), and Sasha Leonardo (CTE/Partnerships Coordinator, ABCUSD) met with representatives from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - National Electrical Contractors Association (IBEW-NECA). Representing IBEW-NECA was Joe Sullivan, Director of Energy Solutions, and Alton Wilkerson, Organizer. Also in attendance was Ernesto Medrano, Council Representative at the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council. This meeting was initiated after Dr. Valencia Mayfield II made a connection with Joe Sullivan at the July 16, 2019, Board Meeting. Dr. Mayfield II and Joe briefly discussed possible partnership opportunities for our students in helping them become college/career ready and Sasha Leonardo was connected to Joe via email to further this discussion. Administration from Artesia HS was invited to join the meeting as their CTE pathways (namely welding, automotive and engineering) align with the building and trades professions. ABCUSD was provided a tour of the Electrical Training Institute (ETI) campus in Commerce, CA where the meeting took place. Following the tour was a discussion regarding opportunities for K-12 students which included: career guest speakers, participation in college/career fairs, ETI tours, and certification programs for high school students. ABCUSD will be inviting ETI to the College Fair in October to provide information to our students and families about an education and career in the electrical trades.

Professional Development - On Saturday, August 24, 2019, the ABC Induction Mentors participated in training with LACOE on the Induction Coaching process and changes to the process for new teachers to complete their credentials.
