ABCUSD Announces New Equity Officer

The ABC Unified School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Adrienne M. Thomas as the District’s first Equity Officer. The Equity Officer position was created to work with schools and students on diversity, inclusion, and equity issues.

“The Equity Officer will play a vital role in helping to ensure we have an atmosphere of equity in our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary Sieu. “We are so glad to have Ms. Thomas back in the District and heading our equity efforts.”

Ms. Thomas knows the District well, having spent four years as Dean of Students at Gahr High School before moving to the Brea Olinda Unified School District as Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Brea Olinda High School. Ms. Thomas holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communications from the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and two Masters of Arts Degrees – one in Child & Adolescent Literacy from Loyola-Marymount University and one in Education from UCLA. She has earned credentials from UCLA and Brandman University and is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Education at USC.

“This position plays an important role in supporting our students,” said ABCUSD Board of Education President Sophia Tse. “Ms. Thomas will have work to do to help create programs supporting all of our students and promote greater understanding throughout our schools.”

The Equity Officer position will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Equity and Diversity Plan for the District to address the Equity Board Policy and other areas of the District’s Strategic Plan. In this role, Ms. Thomas will work directly with the Diversity, Unity, and Equity Board Advisory Committee. She will also serve as the District’s Title IX and Title VI Compliance Officer.
