Carver Elementary School Named as a National Blue Ribbon School
September 19, 2022 – The U.S. Department of Education has recognized outstanding schools through the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program for 40 years. The program named Carver Elementary School a National Blue Ribbon School this year.
“We are so proud of Carver Elementary School for earning this well-deserved recognition,” said ABC Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Gina Zietlow. “I congratulate Principal Berlyn, along with her team of educators and staff, for earning this prestigious designation.”
Carver Elementary School received recognition in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category, meaning the school is among the state's highest-performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. This year’s National Blue Ribbon Schools award is Carver Elementary School’s first. However, the State of California has previously recognized Carver Elementary as a Distinguished School, Gold Ribbon School, and the school received the Title I Academic Achievement Award.
Carver Elementary School is a Title I school serving students from low-income families or underserved communities. Carver is the first Title I elementary school in ABCUSD to earn the National Blue Ribbon School designation.
“Earning a National Blue Ribbon designation is a huge honor,” said Carver Principal Deborah Berlyn. “This recognition reflects the high quality of instruction we give our students and the ongoing support of our students’ families.”
This year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools for their overall academic performance and for closing the achievement gap. Only 353 schools were recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools nationwide, with 33 schools in California. The National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating school environments where students are challenged and engaged.
“The honorees for our 2023 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award have set a national example
for what it means to Raise the Bar in education,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.
