National Filipino American Heritage Month

Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated during the month of October and commemorates the first Filipinos to arrive to the United States in 1857, in Morro Bay, CA. The Filipino American National Historical Society established Filipino American History Month in 1992. Then, 17 years later, in 2009, the US Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month. 

Important Facts About Filipino Americans:

  • Filipinos were the first documented Asian people to arrive to the US
  • 3rd largest Asian American group in the nation, after Chinese, and Indian
  • 3rd largest ethnic group in California, after Latinos and African Americans
Leal Elementary Celebrates Filipino American History Month 2024
Leal Elementary PTA Cultural Committee and Leal Elementary Arts Program (LEAP) sponsored a Cultural Assembly to celebrate Filipino American History Month. Leal students performed the Philippine National Anthem and shared Philippine History. Cerritos High School Students performed a jaw dropping performance of “Sayaw sa Bangko”! The Assembly was supported by Leal Principal - Dr. Jimenez and included visits from City of Cerritos Council Member Frank Yokoyama and USOA Ms. Hawaii Margaret Manuel.
