Under the provisions of the Education Code (51243), districts can give credit for world language courses conducted by private schools where the instruction is equivalent. High school students attending ABC Unified School District (ABCUSD)-approved private World Language programs may request up to ten (10) credits per year for coursework completed while enrolled in grades nine through twelve. To qualify for credit, the following conditions must be met: 

• Current enrollment: The student must be currently enrolled in an ABCUSD high school, as credits cannot be granted for courses taken prior to 9th grade. 
• School Counselor Consultation and Principal Pre-Approval: Students must consult with their ABCUSD school counselor to have course credits added to their official high school transcript. We strongly encourage families to speak with the school counselor before enrolling in any outside course. Pre-approval from the school principal and/or administrative designee is required using ABCUSD’s Application for Approval for High School World Language Credits Form. 
• Application and Curriculum Approval: The completed application containing the curriculum and final evaluation instrument used in the private instruction have been approved by the Academic Services Secondary Curriculum Office. 
• Accreditation: The private World Language program or school must hold full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). 

All schools or programs requesting approval must complete the application below and submit it to the ABCUSD Academic Services-Secondary Curriculum office for review. Approval will be determined based on the degree to which your program compares to the scope, sequence and rigor of the World Language programs provided by the ABCUSD which are guided by the World Languages Standards for California Public Schools and the World Languages Framework for California Public Schools. The District retains the right to independently test the achievement level of the student in the area in which credit is being requested prior to granting credit. Inquiries from World Language programs and schools seeking approval for the purposes of securing high school credit for their students will be coordinated through ABCUSD’s Academic Services Secondary Curriculum Office. Upon receipt of the inquiry, interested schools/programs will be directed to this letter of instruction and the Application for Approval for High School World Language Credits. Once completed, email a PDF version of this application to Dr. Greg Francois, Director of Curriculum & Professional Learning – Secondary, at [email protected], and Prisca Alba, Secretary III, Academic Services-Secondary Curriculum at [email protected] within the application window: May 1-May 31 for the following school year.

The Academic Services Secondary Curriculum office will assign a Curriculum Team to review program approval requests, using District translators if needed. This team may hold a Zoom meeting to ask clarifying questions during the review process. After the review, the office will send an approval or denial email to the requesting school or program's point of contact.
