Welcome to Ross
In November 2004, Ross Middle School became a federally funded Magnet School for Creative and Media Arts. 2016 was a banner year for Ross Academy as the school was only one of thirteen middle schools in the State of California to be selected as a ‘School To Watch-Taking Center Stage’. Ross was honored at both the state level in Sacramento, and at the national level in Washington D.C.
A major focus at Ross is to provide opportunities and equal access to all students. Ross students are challenged in rigorous core academic classes that work in collaboration with an extensive elective program that is rarely found at a middle school. All core academic teachers use state of the art technology to teach the California Common Core Standards in English, History, Science, Math, and Physical Education. Elective classes include Ceramics, Drawing, Advanced Art, Improvisation, Speech & Debate, Journalism, Media Productions/K-ROSS television broadcasts, Computer Technology, Music Appreciation, Advanced Band, Drum Line, and Color Guard. AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, whose mission is to close the achievement gap and prepare students for college readiness and success in a global society, will enter year #3 at Ross and is offered as an elective at both grade levels. Ross remains the only middle school in ABC that offers a Zero Period Physical Education class, which provides motivated students the opportunity to take an additional elective.
In the upcoming 2016-2017 school year, Ross will become the only middle school in ABC to offer a dual immersion program in Spanish. Incoming seventh grade students who meet the criteria for this program will take an advanced Spanish elective class and a History class taught entirely in Spanish. Also new to Ross this coming August will be Project Lead The Way, an 8th grade Science elective that will focus on Robotics and Model & Design.
Technology at Ross is quite extensive. Every classroom at Ross includes Elmo Document Readers, Plasma Televisions or Laser Projectors, 80” Big Screen Televisions, Stereo Sound Bars, and an additional 3-4 iMac desktops specifically for student use. A new computer lab housing 35 state of the art iMac desktops was launched in 2015-2016. In total, the technology inventory for student use includes 150 iMac Desktops, 5 iPad carts holding 35 iPads each, and 150 Chrome Books. Beginning this August, there will be 5 core academic classes offering 1:1 iPads and/or Chrome Books to students.
When students require additional academic support, Ross offers a wide variety of intervention classes after school in Math, English, Science, and History. Students also have access to a Tutoring Center for all academic subjects 4 days a week after school. Reading Plus, a computer based reading program designed to improve students’ ability to read and comprehend, is offered to those students who struggle with reading comprehension. Accelerated Reader, a school wide reading program also used at several of our elementary school feeders, is monitored and incorporated in our English classes.
