  Principal’s Message

Welcome to Cecil B. Stowers Elementary School.  Stowers is an International Baccalaureate World School.  We are a  Magnet School with a focus on International Studies. Our IB World school focuses on developing Internationally Minded students using inquiry based learning.  Students at Stowers use a constructivist’s approach where they construct knowledge for themselves, each learner individually, constructs or makes meaning as he or she learns. We emphasize a hands-on/minds-on approach to learning that focuses on students own inquiry into the subject with performance/project based outcomes.  Being internationally minded is not easy to define. We seek and encourage our students to learn about and embrace cultures.  Inquiry plays a key part in student growth.  Inquiry can be defined as seeking for truth, information, or knowledge by questioning.  An old adage tells us: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand."  We embrace inquiry learning.

Dr. Tom Tracy

Principal

Our international studies curriculum focuses on an understanding of global societies, cultures, languages and the very complex world we live in.  The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) is underpinned by six transdisciplinary themes around which learning is planned.  These are:

Who we are.

Where we are in place and time.

How we express ourselves.

How the world works.

How we organize ourselves.

Sharing the planet

The 6 transdisciplinary themes are selected for their relevance to the real world. They are described as transdisciplinary because they focus on issues that go across subject areas.  The transdisciplinary themes help and guide our teachers as they develop our program of inquiry. Stowers Teachers work together to develop investigations into important ideas, which require a substantial and high level of involvement on the part of students.  These units of study provide a challenging and rewarding inquiry based learning experience for all of our students.

Mission Statement for Stowers Elementary, Magnet School of International Studies.   At Stowers our focus is to develop a strong academic foundation in each of our students based on inquiry, depth of knowledge, and a passion for learning.  As a Magnet School of International Studies, we agree to help students learn and practice the learner profile and attitudes.  We will give students the opportunity to learn how to become lifelong learners, allow them to express themselves, be supportive of their ideas, and give them a global education where they develop empathy, understanding, and caring towards others.

Our multi-cultural students represent cultures from around the world. On a daily basis they exemplify the world around us and are learning that they can collaboratively create a world where they can chose any career, be anyone, and achieve the impossible.

Through our challenging international studies curriculum and rigorous assessments we encourage our students to become active, compassionate, and the type of learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

At Stowers Magnet School of International Studies your child’s education is our priority and we always go...

Above and Beyond!

The most significant and distinctive feature of our school is our emphasis on developing International mindedness to all students.  We research and learn about other countries, cultures, and habits from around the world.  Students present and receive information about different cultures from around the world.  We also offer a Spanish Language program where all students, K-6, are taught Spanish.

Technology

Stowers students use of technology includes PC’s in our computer lab, MACs in the center for inquiry, Chromebooks and MAC laptops, and other associated equipment in the classrooms to enhance their technology literacy.  Our computer technology expectations are designed to ensure  all students will have sufficient skills and knowledge in the use of computers and the associated computer technology to begin a life filled with technology use.  Our computer laboratory specialist uses Smart Technology to enhance our student’s learning and to expand their multi-media capabilities. Being technology literate helps our students develop and enhance their computer skills and competency.  Technology integration helps to make Stowers students technologically competitive in the 21st Century.

ART

Art instruction and integration is always among the highest form of expression of one’s culture.  At Stowers we use the arts to educate our students about world cultures and historical periods. Our art integration instruction teaches our students to appreciate the arts by allowing them to inquire and participate in activities as they grow and gain a deeper understanding of different people and their culture. We believe the arts bring every subject to life, and it also enhances reality. We continue with art appreciation through our PTA programs and during our student created activities and the International Festival.  Each year Stowers participates in the National PTA’s “Reflections” art program. The PTA Reflections program is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage the artistic creativity in the classroom and at home for our students. Students of all grades and abilities participate and explore the arts based on each year’s  theme:

International Festival

We are extremely proud of our interconnectedness activity we call our “International Festival.” Students, parents, and teachers work together with community members to bring different cultures from around the world alive here at Stowers. The International Festival celebrates people, diversity, and our interconnectedness to each other. This amazing family event involves the recreation of cultural games, performances, music, and a variety of international commonalities.

We are Stowers, we are a IB World school, a Magnet School of International Studies, and we are a California Gold Ribbon award winning School.  Come join us!  It is a small world and the more we get together the more we find our interconnectedness.
